How To Choose the Right Diaper Size

Published: 03/06/2024

Figuring out when it's time to change your baby's diaper size is simpler than you might think — when the hints show up, it's time to size up!

Super-sleuth your way to the right size diapers in 5 easy steps:

Step 1: Check your baby’s weight.

The most common way to size a diaper is by your baby’s weight and move up sequentially over time.

Cheeky little cherubs come in all shapes and sizes, so you'll note the sizes overlap to accommodate variability and ensure a snug fit.

Step 2: Consider your baby’s age.

Suppose you don’t have a scale handy. You can use age and average baby weight ranges as a rough estimate. The average baby outgrows newborn diapers by 1-1.5 months. From there, you might move to size 1 or even 2.

  • One month - Size 1 (8-12 lbs)
  • Two to three months - Size 2 (10-16 lbs)
  • Four to eight months - Size 3 (14-24 lbs)
  • Six to 30 months - Size 4 (22-37 lbs)
  • 21 months - 2 years - Size 5 (27-35 lbs)
  • 2 - 3 years: Size 6 (35+lbs)

Growth spurts are a common time to size up. The biggest growth spurts tend to take place at two to three weeks, six weeks, three months, and six months, but you’ll know for sure when they’re eating more, sleeping less, and fussier than usual.

Step 3: Assess the diaper fit.

Tell-tale signs a diaper too big include:

  • Gaps around the legs and waistband
  • A rise above the belly button with tabs that overlap or meet in the middle
  • Saggy baggy diaper drooping, especially when the baby’s active
  • Material bunching in the groin area
  • Frequent leaks and blowouts

On the other hand, a diaper that’s too small may cause:

  • Tight leg bands with red marks along the thighs
  • Difficulty pulling the diaper tabs to fasten
  • A muffin top, where the baby’s belly spills out
  • Bum cheeks peeking out the side
  • Heavy diaper saturation and blowouts

In the end, we hope you’ll find the Goldilocks of diapers: the one that fits just right!

Step 4: Consider a quality upgrade.
