How To Change a Diaper

Published: 03/06/2020

Y’ve read all the books, assembled a new baby wardrobe, painted the nursery, nested, child-proofed the whole house, and brought home a brand new human. Now, if only someone explained how to change diapers.

Don’t worry! We’re going to help you master the art in no time. Let’s get down and dirty in the business of diaper changing.

Step 1: Get the goods.

When changing your baby's diaper, you'll need a few essentials:

  1. A clean diaper. Have at least two on hand when changing diapers – better safe than sorry. (Trust us on this one.)
  1. A changing table/pad. If using a changing table, take advantage of the safety straps and instructions to prevent accidental injuries. If using a pad, ensure it's on a flat surface like the floor, couch, or bed.
  1. A change of clothes. Babies are babies; they can’t help it if their clothes get a little icky from time to time. Having an extra change of clothes on hand can save you a lot of hassle when the situation arises.
  1. Baby wipes. A newborn babe has sensitive skin, so you might want to use warm water and a cloth for the first few weeks. As long as they are preferably plant-based and made with 99% water baby wipes are also fine.
  1. Diaper rash cream/baby powder. A barrier between your baby's bottom and their diaper minimizes the risk of skin irritation when they go number one and two. That's where baby powder comes in handy! If there's already a rash, use cream.
  1. A disposable bag. You'll want something to put the diaper in. Babies are precious, but boy, are they stinky.

Step 2: Get down to business.

Got all your ingredients? Great! Now you’re ready to go. Here’s what you’re going to do:

  • First things first, wash your hands.
  • Place everything within reach so you won't have to turn your back on the baby – it’s recommended that you always keep one hand on them.
  • Lay them on their back, unfasten the diaper tabs, and pick their butt up off the table, slowly pulling out the diaper from under them.
  • Next, thoroughly and gently wipe them clean. Wipe front to back to prevent infection, only cleaning externally.

Tip: When cleaning up little boys, place a cloth over their penis. You’ll thank us when you avoid the famous “pee in your face” maneuver they do so well.

  • Now, you're ready to put on a clean diaper. Lifting them like before, slide the clean diaper under their bottom. Make sure the diaper tabs are on the backside of your baby.
  • Then, apply baby powder or rash cream to the entire diaper area – especially where the diaper edges are – to prevent diaper rashes, chafing, and other ouchies.
  • Finally, close the diaper by pulling the front up onto their stomach, and lifting and attaching the diaper tabs at their hips. Make it snug, but not too tight! We want to keep the blood circulating in those chubby little legs.

P.S. More diaper changing tips.

When to change the diaper

Your baby will typically need to be changed every two hours and use around 8-12 diapers daily, but this will vary depending on their age/weight, the time of day, and other factors.

Babies will usually need to be changed soon after feeding (which is often indicated by smell – if you know what we mean). Change their diaper quickly after it's been soiled to avoid irritation or infection. If they appear to have developed a diaper rash, don't worry; it's very common, even if you're quick to a diaper change. Just remember to apply a soothing diaper rash cream.
